Diplomacy is often referred to as the art by which nations, groups, or individuals conduct their affairs, in ways to safeguard their interests and promote their political, economic and cultural relations.

Cultural diplomacy in particular is a type of soft power that includes the exchange of ideas, information, art, language and other aspects of culture among nations and their peoples in order to foster mutual understanding.

At the just concluded 71st Miss World competition in Mumbai India, cultural diplomacy came to the fore as participants got a chance to showcase their culture, art and fashion to the world.

Miss Hannah Kimera, Uganda’s representative at the Miss World Pageant proficiently showcased our rich culture, diversity and heritage, proving an unlikely but significant partner in the High Commission’s mandate to promote Cultural diplomacy in India and other countries of accreditation.

To leverage on this, the High Commissioner Prof. Joyce Kakuramatsi Kikafunda travelled to Mumbai for the grand finale to support Ms. Kimera’s quest to become the first Ugandan to win this coveted title.

The reigning Miss Uganda performed exceptionally at the grand finale, finishing within the top 8 and bringing home the prestigious Miss World Africa Beauty with a Purpose (BWAP) award.

Miss Hannah Kimera, who intends to pursue a Degree in Law, is an advocate for education of the girl child, a passion which is shared by Prof. Kikafunda.

The High Commissioner and reigning Miss Uganda struck up a close friendship and will continue working together to promote Cultural Diplomacy and champion education of the girl child as a means to mitigate early marriage, reduce gender inequality and promote development.
